This February 28th during the rising of a full moon, we engaged in our first distillation at Goldthread Herb Farm. The full moon is a time when the water element is at its peak. Essential oils being largely composed of this element were thick in the hemlock needles that we chose to distill. We walked out into the snowy Conifer forests behind our farm in the early afternoon and began hand harvesting from the abundant hemlocks that grow there. Later, we gathered in the distillery to sip hot Tulsi Chai grown right here on the farm. It kept us warm while we stripped off the oil-rich needles.

Sometime close to dusk we lit the sacred fire under our still and sat in its warm glow as the Full Snow moon began to peek out from behind the mountains. As the evening moved on we nourished the agni of our fire in exchange for its alchemical labor. All went well and we were rewarded for our work and steady attention with an exquisitely crisp, fresh, and cool oil of Eastern Hemlock. Sounds pretty awesome doesn’t it! That evening was also an opportunity to celebrate with friends and family near and far, the inception of the Goldthread/Floracopeia distillery project and all of the potential that it represents.
We look forward to the community’s participation and interest in this project and are certain the oils will knock your socks off !
